Styles Upon Styles: A Discussion About Fashion's Role in Hip Hop Culture

In December, we hosted five prominent style icons and storytellers for a panel discussion about the dynamic relationship between fashion and hip-hop culture against the backdrop of our Beat Positive gallery exhibition in collaboration with Getty Images.

Moderated by author and journalist Vikki Tobak, the illustrious panelists – sartorial icon Dapper Dan, hip-hop photographer Janette Beckman, renowned stylist and entrepreneur April Walker, and music video director and DJ Va$htie – shared insights on their personal experiences with the intersection of hip-hop and fashion, how they’ve seen the relationship develop over the past few decades and where they predict it going in the future.

A lot of what they discuss is represented in the Beat Positive exhibition, which explores the dawn of hip hop culture, from 1981 to 1993, through powerful photographs with phenomenal back stories.

The exhibition is on-view through February 2nd and select pieces can be viewed here
